Volunteerism is skyrocketing among today's youth, and many experts are pointing to the Internet as a major contributing factor. A recent study found that 83% of incoming college freshmen volunteered during their senior year of high school—up from 69% who did so in 1989. Jeff Berman, an executive vice president of marketing for MySpace, says many young people are learning about charities via social networking sites. There are more than 22,000 nonprofit groups on MySpace alone, Berman said. Other experts agree that volunteerism is booming in cyberspace. "Activism is at a very high level among college students, probably more than in the last 10 to 20 years," said Robert Rhoads, a professor at the UCLA. "There's a greater political consciousness among students. The Internet played a role in that."
