A recent Girl Scouts of America study found that nine in 10 American teenage girls feel pressured by the fashion and media industries to look like magazine models. The survey of 1,000 13- to 17-year-old girls also found that more than 80% of them would prefer natural photos of models. One in three reported starving themselves to lose weight. More than a third said they know someone who has been diagnosed with an eating disorder. [reuters.com, 2/1/10 stats - Plugged In Online 2/16/10]

"Music videos of girl bands have a big impact. They are very much telling girls that success comes to those who are skinny." —Dr. Amanda Jordan, chief executive of Australia's Eating Disorders Foundation. Her team's research indicated that as few as 10 minutes watching music videos of super-slinky, skin-baring bands such as the Pussycat Dolls had a negative impact on the way 90 16- to 18-year-old girls thought about their bodies. Another researcher, Dr. Helga Dittmar, summarized the study's overall findings: "Girls with both high and low self-esteem were equally vulnerable to the negative impact of music videos on their body image."
