cosmetic surgery

From 1997 to 2007, the number of cosmetic surgery procedures performed on people 18 or younger tripled, says the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, from 59,890 to 205,119. And Time reports that the number of men (of all ages) getting Botox injections nearly tripled from 2001 to 2007, soaring to 300,000, which represents about 7% of all Botox recipients. Jean Kilbourne, co-author of So Sexy, So Soon, says, "Our children are barraged with images of ideal women and men that aren't even real, but computer composites. These girls and boys can't compete. The truth is, no one can. And it leaves teens feeling more inadequate than ever." In 2005 (the last full year for which statistics are available for younger women), more than 3,500 girls below the age of 18 had similar surgery—despite the fact that the Food and Drug Administration cautions against it.
